Enhance the lives of autistic families by providing additional resources and training to allow the entire family the ability to attend community events and outings. This will create a more inclusive community. Including autistic families into the community, the community will also become more aware of the different aspects of autism and how to interact with them.
We believe in the oldest institution on earth which is the family. Having an unhealthy family is impactful to all involved, which is why we believe by providing inclusive therapy centered around the autistic member which benefits the entire family. Including the family into the therapy, the family will be better equipped to function outside the home with a lower level of stress and anxiety.
By providing the necessary personnel and training to assist families with real-life application of the therapy provided, they will be able to attend community events and activities on a regular basis. This inclusion will provide a higher quality of life, build relationships, and expand the opportunities of the autistic member. This has the potential to open more doors to those with the autistic diagnosis to obtain more opportunities and a better quality of life.
Mr.B's Kidz was created by the Washington's in 2022 to integrate autistic families into the community. Their goal is to provide additional support to ensure that all members have an enjoyable outing.
ABA Therapy is centered around the autistic member. This is great for that person, but often times the family still struggles. We saw a need to assist families in filling that gap. When a family member is diagnosed with autism, the entire family dynamic changes.
Together they saw a need to get the families back out into the community and to educate the community about the different levels of autism. This is essential in improving the quality of life for all involved. Community integration will allow those on the autism spectrum the ability to rejoin the community and grow in their abilities. Inclusion into the community, our autistic members will be able to utilize their skills and abilities to make their local communities better.
It became their mission to provide resources and assistance to provide real life application and training for the entire family to be able to attend community events and activities.
During the summer of 2022, they were able to provide two families and behavior therapists with a trip to Sea World. During this trip the mothers had the security to enjoy themselves while the autistic members of the families had the additional support necessary to stay calm and partake in the events of the day.
When the day was over and they were leaving the park, the non-verbal autistic member spoke a few words and had the biggest smile on her face. She had a wonderful time and was able to express it.
Another autistic member was able to enjoy most of the day but needed the assistance of his behavior therapist near the end of the day. It was reassuring to the mother that her child was going to be safe during this time. She was able to relax and continue to enjoy activities with her other kids knowing his therapist was able to assist her child.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), about 1% of the world’s population has autism spectrum disorder – over 75,000,000 people. Recent data indicates that at least 3 million Americans are “on the Spectrum.” At least 10x as many children are now considered to have ASD than 40 years ago, with increased publicity, awareness, and diagnosis being only part of the reason.
ABA is a therapy based on the science of learning and behavior. It is typically used to help people with autism and other developmental disorders learn behaviors that help them live safer and more fulfilling lives.
ABA focuses on teaching necessary skills and stopping dangerous behaviors rather than preventing harmless self-stimulatory behavior (stims). Therapists work with autistic people to improve skills like:
The goal is not for someone to appear neurotypical. The goal is for their life to be improved in a way that is meaningful to them.
ABA is effective for people of all ages. While therapy looks different in young children versus adolescents and adults, the principles remain the same. ABA can help adults achieve goals that they want to work on. These might include:
Because autistic people past age 14 often have difficulty getting funding for formal ABA therapy through their private insurance, adults usually utilize ABA principles more casually in their everyday lives. For instance, someone learning to greet others by saying "hello" may practice this skill in the grocery store and on a walk in the neighborhood rather than in a clinic. Similarly, a mother using positive reinforcement to teach her son how to get to work on a public bus is using ABA principles.
Without as much in-clinic support, parents, family members and caregivers often play a more active role in ABA-based learning for this age group. The key is for the person to get rewarded for their efforts with positive reinforcement, either from a therapist, family member or the environment.
How can families embrace ABA principles to help the autistic adults in their lives achieve their goals?
